The story of Hansel & Gretel is a well know and classic fairy tale but I also think it can be a little scary for the little ones with the horrible Step-Mother leaving the children out in the forest because she didn’t want them any more, the wicked Witch trapping the children in her house and then the witch being pushed in the oven….so Idecided there is plenty of time in the future to tell the tradditional tale and to make up my own more ‘friendly’ version.
Using the beautiful Hansel & Gretel glove puppet from Romantic Flair Original I entertained the delighted Mini Me with a newer, lighter version of the tale. It went a little something like this…..
Once upon a time in a little wood house in the forest lived a boy named Hansel and a girl names Gretel. They lived in the small wood house with their Father and Grandmother. Each day they would head out into the forest to collect wood for the fire and berries for food.
One day when they were walking through the forest they came across a house made of chocolate and lollies. It looked so beautiful and they wanted to have a taste but they remembered what Father and Grandmother had taught them and they had to ask before they took something that was not theirs.
Hansel and Gretel knocked on the door of the house and were greeted by a witch. The witch was huffing and puffing and told them that she has just been busy sweeping. Hansel & Gretel asked the witch nicely if they could have some of the chocolate and lollies from her house. The witch kindly agreed, so Hansel and Gretel began to nibble at the chocolate and lollies.
While they were eating, the Witch came outside and told them how her garden was so over grown and she was getting old and couldn’t look after it all by herself. Hansel & Gretel offered to help the Witch pull out the weeds and rake up the leaves as she had been so kind to give them some chocolate. Once the garden was all tidy the Witch was so happy with how it looked she gave Hansel & Gretel a bright red ruby to say thank you.
Hansel & Gretel rushed home to show Father and Grandmother. They took the ruby to town and traded it for wood, new clothes, animals and seeds so they could grow their own food and they never had to go searching in the forest again.
What do you think? Mini Me thought it was pretty good and giggled as I made the people talk and nibble on the house.
The other great thing about making up your own stories is you are able to teach about helping, always asking, being kind and so much more..the possibilities for stories and teaching are endless!
After I told the story to Mini Me I asked her to tell me a story….if you watch this short video you will see her version of my story, she remembered the most important part of course
The Glove Puppets are great quality with wooden heads and material bodies with each person dressed individually. The gloves are the perfect fit for an adult and so are quite roomy for a child but they can still get their fingers in the puppets to tell a story.
The Glove Puppets not only promote imaginary play and story telling but also help with language skills and social skills, with children being able to tell stories to each other. The other thing I love is that because they are all sewn on the one glove you can’t lose any of the people!
You can also get other stories including Three Little Pigs, Jungle and the super cute different jobs Glove Puppet.
